Super Munter (Double Munter) Hitch Details

The Super Munter Hitch is also known as the Double Munter and the Monster Munter. Like the plain Munter, it is possible to flip the knot to take in slack with the tail. However, the Super Munter requires a double flip and has too much friction to make this useful as a climbing knot.

Optimal Gate Location: The Animation shows a Munter being converted to a Super Munter. The gate started in the optimal location for the Munter - away from the tail end. However the additional turn of the Super Munter has brought the tail against the gate, risking it rotating and releasing. When the intention from the outset is to create the Super Munter, the carabiner should be reversed so that the gate will be remote from the tail end.

Uses: It is used in Search and Rescue to lower heavy loads. The extra friction from the added turn greatly reduces the force required to control the descent. It is not used in normal climbing because the plain Munter is more appropriate.

Advantages: The Super Munter overcomes one of the problems with the plain Munter. The extra turn stops the knot introducing kinks and twists in the rope.
